EHR Test Appropriateness

Project type

EHR, Life Sciences

Date

2017

Location

Waltham, MA

Client

UpToDate | Wolters Kluwer

I designed an EHR-integrated solution that flags unnecessary and redundant medical tests during the test ordering process. An example of this is if the same test has very recently been performed on the patient at a different facility and may not have been noticed by the ordering doctor or nurse. Any medical specialist who tries to order such a test is informed electronically that this testing may not be necessary for the given patient. This still allow a specialist the autonomy to reorder the test based on their judgement, by requiring them to explain individual circumstances. This information is recorded in the patient's record for future accountability and avoids burdening patients with extra tests, streamlines insurance costs for companies, and gives hospitals extra legal protection.
